Nigeria Records 1973-2002; 1988-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Nigeria. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) in mission efforts. The records are from 1973-2002, but the bulk date from 1988-2002. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. Daniel W. Olson and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include typewritten business correspondence, email correspondence, budgets, topical reports, audit reports, financial correspondence, meeting reports and minutes, progress reports, conference proceedings, handbooks, committee reports, news articles, circular letters, brochures, and publications. In addition to records pertaining to the general administration of the LCCN and its finances, subject matter for this series includes two seminaries, the interdenominational Theological College of Northern Nigeria and Bronnum Lutheran Seminary; Hillcrest School, a school where missionary children are educated; and Christian-Muslim relations. There are several records that pertain to a crisis that began in 1995 when the LCCN's general council decided to establish additional dioceses and elect more bishops. The crisis resulted in a split of the church into two factions that resulted in a Nigerian court voiding the church's constitution in 1999. The constitution was subsequently amended in 2000, but one faction opposed the amended constitution. Mediation between the two factions began in 2000. While this series includes records related to the LCCN and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records. Arrangement of the records is by subject.
